**PREFERRED GERMINATION METHOD FOR GIFTED NOVELTY SEEDS**

SUPPLIES:

seeds, solo cup, bottled Spring Water, half paper towel, sand paper, tape, Sharpe. (*hydrogen peroxide-H2O2)

PRESTEP 1.

(SCARIFICATION) Scarify seed by very gently rubbing base, pointy tip, and ridgeline on fine grit sandpaper, or simply roll a piece of sandpaper up, fold/tape one end, put seeds in, fold/tape other end and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

PRESTEP 2.

‘Quick warm water soak’:(For very large and very dense seeds ONLY that have been scarified to assist in softening the epidermis. Do not soak small seeds or any seed at all with a thinner epidermis) Pour very warm spring water in a bowl and soak SCARIFIED seeds for 1-2 HOURS ONLY WHILE KEEPING THE WATER VERY WARM. Remove and proceed with Step1. (This soak is only to soften the shell. There is no need to soak overnight or longer since the seed doesn’t have the chemical coating that some perennials have that prevent the seed from germinating out of season.) Over-soaking (fully submerged) in water with no oxygen can lead to waterlogged seeds that dissolve and die.

ETHOS PREFERRED GERMINATION OPTION:

Step1: Fold up half paper towel at ~1″ wide and ~4″ long. (Pic2&3)
Step2: Take one end and make a crease about 1″ down and make a pouch. Put seeds in pouch. (Pic4&5)
Step3: fold over once more so that seeds stay in the 1″ square pouch. (Pic6)
Step4: (Pic7) Hang pouch end with seeds on the lip of the LABELED cup and put the other end down in the 1-1.5″ of Spring Water (Add H2O2 into water @ a 3-5% solution). Secure pouches around the cup with a string and place cup on a saucer. Maintain this level of H2O2 solution and check twice a day until all seeds have germinated. (You can just put the entire pouch in the cup if you so choose.)

*Seeds can pop within a day but can take up to two weeks or more so be patient. Remove seed and plant in preferred media at first sign of germination.

*To Check: Remove folded paper towel and lay down flat so the seeds don’t go falling down the towel or out on the table. Open the folded pouch end and look in the pouch to see what seeds have germinated. Use a chopstick to gently move around the seeds in the pouch without breaking any unseen roots for a better view.
